Careers at Advanced Maintenance

Advanced Maintenance UK Ltd is a mechanical maintenance and compliance contractor based in Theale, Berkshire. Since 1998, we have supported clients across housing, healthcare, education and commercial environments throughout the South of England.

Delivering a reliable service depends on people with a wide range of skills. From our engineers and site-based teams to the people coordinating appointments, supporting clients, managing contracts and keeping the business running, everyone has an important part to play.

We recruit carefully, employ people directly and invest in building capable teams for the long term. You can find our current opportunities below. If there isn’t a suitable vacancy today, you are still welcome to register your interest in working with us.

Working Here

Whatever your role, working at Advanced Maintenance means contributing to a service that our clients and their customers can depend upon.

Our teams support thousands of properties across housing, healthcare, education and commercial environments. Some employees work from our Theale office, some are primarily site-based, and others work across different locations. This creates opportunities in engineering, administration, customer service, compliance, contract management, supervision and wider business support.

We are an established business with experienced teams, long-standing client relationships and the systems needed to work effectively. At the same time, we remain small enough for people to know one another, communicate directly and understand how their work contributes to the wider company.

Honesty, integrity, customer focus and care in the way we carry out our responsibilities are important to us. We expect everyone representing Advanced Maintenance to treat colleagues, clients and customers with dignity and respect.

We are also committed to providing a safe working environment. Employees receive an induction and the information, training and equipment relevant to their role.

We value people who take pride in their work, behave professionally and contribute as part of a team. In return, we aim to provide clear expectations, appropriate support and opportunities to develop.

Benefits and working arrangements may vary according to the role, but typically include:

  • Permanent, directly employed positions

  • 25 days’ annual leave plus 8 bank holidays, with one additional day awarded for every two completed years of service, up to a maximum of five additional days

  • Commitment to the Real Living Wage

  • Workplace pension

  • Role-relevant training and professional development for permanent employees

  • An annual training budget, with approved course and assessment costs funded in accordance with company policy

  • A six-month probationary period

Working hours, location, equipment, qualifications and any on-call requirements will be explained in the individual vacancy.

Current Vacancies

Engineering Team - Ventilation Engineer

Ventilation has a different working rhythm from many of our other services, and we believe in being clear about that from the outset. This is our highest-volume service and involves servicing, testing and completing remedial work on extract ventilation and MVHR systems across large housing portfolios.

Most appointments take place in occupied homes, so you will be communicating directly with residents and working respectfully within their properties throughout the day.

This role is likely to suit someone who enjoys working through a planned schedule, visiting a variety of locations and completing multiple jobs. Someone who prefers to spend most of the day on a single substantial repair may be better suited to one of our other engineering roles.

Engineering Team - Plumber

This is a varied plumbing role covering repairs, replacements, upgrades and remedial work across social housing, care settings and commercial properties.

Our jobs are often more substantial than quick call-outs, so you will usually work at a smaller number of properties each day rather than progressing through a long list of brief appointments.

Alongside general plumbing repairs and installations, the workload includes damp and mould remedial works and Legionella-related remedials. Much of the work takes place in occupied homes and care environments, so the ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with residents and building users is just as important to us as technical ability.

Engineering Team - Multi-Trade Operative

This is a varied, plumbing-led role primarily involving bathroom repairs, replacements and associated remedial works across occupied homes. Typical jobs may include replacing baths and sanitaryware, completing tiling and carrying out the making-good work needed to leave the bathroom finished to a good standard.

The role also includes general plumbing repairs and wider building-fabric work connected with each job. Being able to complete the surrounding work, rather than requiring several different trades to attend, helps us provide a more efficient service and reduces disruption for residents.

We are not looking for someone who claims to be an expert in every trade. We are looking for someone with strong practical plumbing skills, experience of bathroom works and the ability to complete associated tiling and making-good work carefully and professionally.

How We Recruit

We want our recruitment process to be clear, consistent and fair. Applications are assessed against the requirements set out in the vacancy, job description and person specification.

1. Application

  • Apply using the method shown in the vacancy. This will usually involve sending us your CV, together with any additional information requested in the advert.

  • If you need a reasonable adjustment at any stage of the recruitment process, please let us know.

2. Shortlisting

  • Applications are considered against objective criteria based on the skills, qualifications, experience and requirements of the position.

  • Candidates who most closely meet the criteria will be invited to the next stage of the process.

3. Interview

  • The interview will focus on the role and the skills, qualifications and experience required to perform it effectively. Wherever possible, interviews will be conducted by at least two members of the Advanced Maintenance team.

  • Depending on the position, the selection process may also include an appropriate practical exercise or skills assessment. If this applies, we will explain the arrangements in advance.

  • The interview also gives you an opportunity to learn more about Advanced Maintenance, meet members of the team and ask us questions about the position.

4. Decision

We will consider all the information gathered during the selection process before making a decision. Employment offers are not normally made during an interview and require prior approval from a company director.

5. Conditional Offer and Pre-employment Checks

The successful candidate will receive a written offer setting out any conditions that must be met before employment begins. These will normally include:

  • At least two satisfactory written references, one of which must be from a previous employer

  • Evidence of the right to work in the UK

  • Documentary evidence of any qualifications required for the role

If this is the candidate’s first job, an appropriate reference from a schoolteacher or college or university lecturer may be accepted in place of an employer reference.

Some positions may require additional checks, such as a Disclosure and Barring Service check. Where this applies, it will be made clear during the recruitment process, and any information obtained will be considered fairly and handled confidentially.

Equality Statement

Advanced Maintenance UK Ltd is committed to providing equality of opportunity and creating an inclusive workplace where everyone is treated fairly, respectfully and with dignity.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. Recruitment, selection, training and employment decisions are based on the requirements of the role and the individual’s skills, qualifications, experience and suitability.

We do not discriminate on the grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, including colour, nationality and ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation.

Reasonable adjustments are available throughout the recruitment process. Applicants are encouraged to let us know if an adjustment would help them participate fully in any stage of their application.

5-star: Excellent company

Really excellent company. Reliable and skilled team. All costs are explained upfront, and best advice given. They fitted my first boiler years ago, and my new one just over a year ago.

More recently they’ve carried out a range of gas works and serviced the boiler.
